The gasket basically mimics the shape of the housing, allowing the enclosure to be screwed to the wall and have a compressible seal behind or in it. Walls are normally uneven so the malleable gasket allows for compression and then makes a perfect air tight and water tight seal. This ensures the light doesn�t stop working due to water intrusion.
